Guidubaldo I da Montefeltro
(Pistoia, ab. 1439 - Fossombrone, 1497/98)
Profile of Guidubaldo da Montefeltro
around 1485-1490
limestone, cm 54 × 38 × 9,5, inv. S 96
from the Stoppani - Fabretti collection in the upper loggias of the Ducal Palace of Urbino
The original provenance of this relief is unknown, but we do know that it was walled up in the Ducal Palace upper loggias in the early 18th century. Although ruined, one can perceive all of Domenico Rosselli’s ability to work stone with subtle transitions of perspective planes, as in the portraits of Federico da Montefeltro and his son that Rosselli sculpted in the architrave of the doorway between the Hall of Angels and the Throne Room. Duke Guidubaldo da Montefeltro is traditionally recognised as being the young man.
