This copy of Bartolomeo della Gatta’s portrait, with identical measurements to the original, was probably made when the original was still in the ancient Duchy of Urbino. The profile of Guidubaldo was painted around 1480-81, during the years when Bartolomeo was in the service of the duke as miniaturist and painter, and the young heir was eight or nine years old. The portrait is inspired by Flemish models because of the dark background and the attention to the rendering of fabrics and light on the skin.
