The drawing, formerly attributed to Andrea Mantegna, has been identified as an accurate preparatory study for the figure of the Madonna and Child painted at the centre of The Presentation of Jesus in the Temple, now preserved in the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice. The altarpiece, signed and dated 1510, is unanimously regarded as one of the finest achievements in Vittore Carpaccio’s pictorial output. This drawing, therefore, stands as a valuable addition to the artist’s graphic corpus, as he was one of the most skilled and gifted draughtsmen of the Venetian Renaissance.
