from the Fabretti - Stoppani collection in the upper loggias of the Ducal Palace of Urbino
The relief was walled in the Ducal Palace’s upper loggias together with the profile of Guidubaldo da Montefeltro and the lunette of Federico da Montefeltro and Ottaviano Ubaldini. Traditionally, it is believed that it is a portrait of Battista Sforza, created to celebrate her virtues and commemorate her after her death (7th July 1472). The fashionable details and highly sought-after hairstyle hark back to the turn of the century, when the Sienese architect Francesco di Giorgio and the Lombard sculptor Ambrogio Barocci worked at the palace.

Il bassorilievo, attribuito a Francesco di Giorgio Martini e proveniente dalle antiche raccolte del Palazzo Ducale, fu realizzato dopo la morte di Battista Sforza. E' l'unica immagine della contessa rimasta ad Urbino. Altre opere che la raffigurano si trovano a Firenze ('Ritratto di Battista', dipinto su tavola, di Piero della Francesca e quello marmoreo di Francesco Laurana) e a Pesaro (bassorilievo di Francesco Laurana).
