suore giardiniere

Giuseppe Cignaroli
(Verona, 1726 - 1796)
Gardener Nuns
around 1740-1760
oil on canvas, cm 50 × 38, inv. D 168

The small painting, together with the pendant displayed next to it, is a delightful genre scene by Giuseppe Cignaroli, one of the most interesting Veronese painters of his generation. Portraying monks, nuns and friars at work or in prayer was a fashionable trend, particularly in the Veneto region in the second half of the 18th century. Probably a pupil of the more famous Giambettino Cignaroli, his older brother, in these works Giuseppe demonstrates how he has incorporated the teachings of Giambattista Tiepolo.

Historical and critical notes
