In the room, Elisabeth is depicted in her bed, in the presence of her husband Zechariah and two handmaidens. In the foreground, some women are preparing to wash the infant Baptist and on the right we can see two women and a young man who draw back a curtain and witness the scene. Behind them a room opens up with a staircase which another handmaiden is climbing up. The work uses some typically mannerist solutions To direct the viewer’s attention, such as the device of the young woman who, while warming a cloth at the fireplace, turns her gaze towards the viewer.
