This altarpiece renews the Renaissance iconographic layout in its pyramidal composition. On the left, Saint Augustine, depicted from behind, is accompanied by the bishop’s insignia; Magdalene holds an elegant jug instead of the jar of ointments. On the right side is the Massacre of the Innocents with buildings with classical architectural forms. Pomarancio’s success in Le Marche, where he left numerous works, is due to his important activity as a fresco painter in the Basilica of Loreto.
