from the church of San Bartolo in Urbino
This triptych, with its typical Tuscan form, decorated the high altar of San Bartolo. In a simple but effective narrative style, four stories of the titular saint are told on the sides of Madonna of Milk. Bottom left: while the infant Bartholomew is nursed by his mother, a letter is prepared for his father, a king at war, entrusted to a messenger who falls asleep on the way. The devil, disguised as a monk, replaces the letter with one in which he warns the ruler of the serious illness of his wife, who has given birth to a monster, suggesting that they both must be burnt. Top left: the king receives the letter and warns his wife of the victory and of his imminent return home; the devil again takes advantage of a moment of rest by the messenger to replace the letter with one in which he orders the killing of both of them, an order that is not carried out. Bottom right: the saint brings down a pagan idol with the power of faith; top right: Bartholomew exorcises the daughter of King Polymius.
- Historical and critical notes
