The long, narrow scene unfolds in a dense forest where putti and dogs hunt and kill boars and deer. On the two narrow bands - probably intended in some way for hanging the fabric - the same scene is repeated with minute embroidery worthy of a Flemish painting. The original purpose of this precious textile remains uncertain. It was perhaps commissioned by Francesco Maria I della Rovere to celebrate the ritual of the hunt, so beloved at his court.

Inizialmente di paternità ignota, la lunga scena di caccia è stata recentemente attribuita a Girolamo Genga che avrebbe fornito il disegno preparatorio poi ricamato su seta. L'attribuzione è da riferirsi al Genga per essere stato regista degli affreschi dell'Imperiale di Pesaro.
