Although the verso bears an old attribution to Federico Zuccari, the sheet should be attributed to the Roman painter Giuseppe Puglia, known as il Bastaro, as has already been correctly noted by art historians. The drawing is a preparatory study for the figure of the Virgin in the Lamentation over the Dead Christ in San Girolamo dei Croati in Rome, a painting executed by the artist in 1633. A closer stylistic analysis clearly reveals Puglia’s preference for the formal elements of Bolognese classicism, particularly the figurative language of Guido Reni.
